I’m exaggerating with my clickbait title, but I know a lot of people who sincerely believe there’s no funding available in Quebec for English speakers.
For real if you asked people in some forma study way, the amount of people who believe as an anglophone they can’t get grant money is far too high, we need to dispel some myths folks.
I was informed while driving Uber that what we are doing with The Trainman Report could easily get grant funding. We’re serving a legitimate need for our community, by looking into local news and promoting local businesses & organizations. With a bit of help we can really grow the show.
To get more resources, we may want to take some time and invest in some grants.
For once I will say, thank goodness I’m English in Quebec.
Canada’s language act actually protects English speakers in Quebec as a minority group
The official languages act set out to make Canada a bilingual country.
Part of this was to recognize language minority groups. For most of Canada, this means French is a protected language group. In Quebec, English is the minority language.
When we were looking into grants for Notre Dame Des Arts, we realized that there’s actually a lot of grant funding related to helping anglos.
Especially if you can solve systemic issues.
It’s not just at the federal level. There are many departments of Quebec’s government that are really about building an equal culture.
Either way, English speaking people are an actual factual invisible minority in Quebec.
Only 25% of musicians who apply for grants receive them
Remove all other factors, there will always be more people applying for grants than recipients.
The Musicaction (French FACTOR) folk at this talk I attended let us know in the best case, 25% of people who apply get the grant. Chances are, it may take you a few rounds to actually get approved. End of the day, even if you are really prepared, someone else may be just a little more prepared with a slightly better idea.
That being said the grant people are apparently available to review your application after.
If you take their advice, tighten things up for your next grant, you just may get it.
Once you are in the system, approval is a lot easier
The first grant you get could take years.
Once you get it, you are now greenlit in the system. While it doesn’t mean you will automatically get grants, or the same amount as last year, it does mean you will likely get approved more often. Keep in mind everything from how early you apply, to how well you present a realistic plan is evaluated.
A lot of times people will lose a grant when they get caught slipping, or fail to live up to expectation.
Either way, I had an Uber passenger tell me to go get grant money for The Trainman Report and I wanted to share that with y’all.
Go get your own grant money my fellow people.
Live Long and Prosper Everyone
